1d. Selects appropriate formative assessments to monitor learning. Quality formative assessment can drive instruction and help educators to more effectively reach their students. Instruction is pointless if it is not meeting the needs of the students and challenging them to do better. Throughout my final internship, I used a variety of formative assessments. I routinely used the "thumbs up/ thumbs down" strategy to see if students understood instructions or content material. Another method I found to be very effective was the use of two small cones (one green and one orange). Each group was equipped with these two cones, and when they were working in small groups, they would display one or the other. The green cone indicated to me that these students were on track and felt relatively confident with the material. The orange cone, on the other hand, told me to "slow down," because this group needed help with something. This little visual indicator worked wonders for my ability to formatively assess my students.
