5.5 Demonstrate research-based instructional practices for developing phonics skills and word recognition.
|
HD Word Treeline Elementary employs a program from the Really Great Reading organization. It is called HD Word, and it is designed to help struggling readers. HD Word is a series of targeted lessons that teaches foundational skills. Through these lessons and the provided materials, the students bolster their decoding ability and reading fluency.
The students in my classroom are predominately at or above grade level where phonics and word recognition are concerned. However, this school-wide program helps to improve their confidence and expertise while reading aloud. When I was first introduced to this program, I was a bit skeptical. I had seen many other strategies and practices for developing phonics skills, and I was curious how this program would measure up. After having observed and executed many HD Word lessons, I have come to the conclusion that this is a highly beneficial program. When executed properly, it assists students with their abilities to identify, segment, and decode on level words. I appreciate all that this program has done and will do for my students in the future. By ensuring that my students have a strong foundation, I will be able to design lessons and activities that scaffold off of these skills in the future. |
