2f. Maintains a climate of openness, inquiry, fairness and support. In order for students to thrive in the classroom, they must know that their classroom is a safe haven where they will be respected and cared about. There are many ways to build a classroom community, and often teachers focus heavily on this during the first few weeks of school. While initial team building is important, it is imperative that these activities be maintained throughout the school year. One of the ways that my mentor and I promote openness and support in the classroom is through the students' Pinpressions lanyards. Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to earn pins for excellence in academia as well as for attendance and good moral fiber. My mentor and I made sure the pins were dispersed relatively evenly, and the students knew that it was not a contest. Teachers must remember to celebrate their students little achievements as well as their grand successes. Another way, we encourage openness, inquiry, fairness, and support is through our Monday Morning Meetings. During this weekly meeting, we discuss the upcoming school events, any concerns the students might have, and select a Star Student. The students and I, then, create a defining map about the student and what makes them so special. This exercise provides students with a forum in which to build up their classmates.
