Students need to be engaged in meaningful experiences in the classroom. Children learn more by actively doing something than using rote memorization. Many students learn more effectively when given tactile materials that can be used to help illustrate the concept. The use of manipulatives can be a powerful resource for students of several different learning styles. In our classroom, my mentor and I use manipulatives like counters, unifix cubes, base ten blocks, and tangrams to illustrate complex Mathematics concepts. For many students, these visual representations illuminate something that might otherwise have been too abstract.
