Students often seek to emulate their teachers especially if they admire and respect them. Modeling clear, acceptable oral and written communication is crucial. As an educator, if your grammar, syntax, or even handwriting is bad, students will think this is acceptable for them as well. During my final internship, I was routinely modeling appropriate oral and written communication. Throughout the day, I executed activities across all content areas. I was sure to use excellent handwriting, grammar, syntax, and standard writing conventions. Additionally, I take pride in my oral communication skills. When students use an incorrect tense or misplaced word, I restate their sentence and replace their inaccurate information. For example, a student recently said, "This tooked me a long time to finish." I immediately repeated it back to him with the corrected verb. These little interactions demonstrate expertise and model appropriate use of oral language.
